Been away for a week, Jason Kramer filled in for me last week, and it was very nice to be back with you on KCRW. Started off with a classic from Dr. John and the new name (“Ju Ju” was spoken for already…) for my brand new Sunday weekly dance party here in Los Angeles at La Cita, “Gris-Gris”!
Lots of new releases on this show, including a well timed collection of “stripped” mixes of early Michael Jackson, new music from These United States, The Heavy, Lord Newborn & the Magic Skulls (i.e. Shawn Lee, Tommy Guerrero & Money Mark), Hope Sandoval and several very solid collections of latin/spanish music, all strangely vol. #2’s, Panama by Strut, Si Para Usted by Waxing Deep and Sensacional Soul by Madrid’s Vampi Soul.
At the beginning of the second hour I highlight several tracks from the recently released, long thought lost, second album from 24-Carat Black, Gone: The Promises of Yesterday. Check “Under Review” on this blog for a full review of the release. Also closed with a short tribute to a legendary rockabilly performer, Billy Lee Riley, who passed away recently. His song “Red Hot” is one of my all time favorite rockabilly songs and is perhaps the only song I know to include “doodely-squat” in a lyric and some how not lose any cool points whatsoever.
